Letter of the week!
Some people love it, others not so much.
The controversy around letter of the week lies in how people are using it.
Some parents and teachers are using letter of the week to teach their preschoolers the alphabet. Unfortunately, letter of the week is not repetitive enough for most kids to catch on and remember each letter beyond the week you are working on it.
If you are looking for a simple and easy way to teach your child the alphabet I would start here.
I, personally, love doing letter of the week with my daughter. I think it’s a great way to review a letter’s sound and a fun way to theme crafts for the week. It challenges me to find something new instead of doing the same handful of crafts all the time.
One craft that is easy to start the week with is my Make A Letter Craft.
How to do it
Every week, usually on Mondays when I’m super busy, I’ll draw out an uppercase and lowercase letter on some construction paper. From there I will fill in the letter with liquid glue. The last step is pouring stuff in a bowl that your kid can glue to the paper.
The best part about this craft is you can use whatever you have laying around the house! Here is a list of what I usually give my daughter to glue to the page.
- Beans
- Noodles
- Cereal
- Cut up paper
- Beads
- Small buttons
- Cut up ribbon
My usual go to is cereal. Then my daughter can snack while she’s crafting!
Educational Benefits
This activity is great for fine motor skills! The repetitive pinching will work your kids little fingers without them even realizing it!
It is also a great pre-writing activity!
When your preschooler is filling in the letter they will start to get familiar with the shape and curves of the letter.
Once the craft is dry, you can hang up the letter and have your child practice tracing it throughout the week! Toddlers learn better when they can touch and feel things. The different textures will add something fun and new to alphabet practice.
Honestly, my preschooler loves this activity so much she asked to make different letters throughout the week.
What do you think? Was there something different you did to make this more fun?
